2 brands of CO detectors are failing to alert users of presence of deadly gas, officials warn

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

Officials are warning about two brands of carbon monoxide detectors that are failing to alert when carbon monoxide is present, which could lead to death or serious injury for users.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported that digital display carbon monoxide detectors produced by GLBSUNION and CUZMAK could put your life in danger.

According to the CPSC's release, sensitivity tests were conducted on the two brands of detectors, with both failing to alert when exposed to pre-determined concentrations of carbon monoxide (400 ppm).

The detectors were being sold on Amazon.com for between $16 and $40. They both are made of white plastic, feature a digital display and have approximate dimensions of 4-by-1.5-by-4 inches.

Both brands claim their products detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and alert with a flashing red LED and a loud alarm pattern.

Model No. AJ-938 was sold under the Amazon ASIN B093Y1KK5Q and B093Y637CM; and Model No. CD01 was sold under the Amazon ASIN B07MPVK6HG and B07K44HLCV.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas, but highly poisonous and flammable. Over 200 people in the United States die yearly from accidental, non-fire related CO poisoning associated with consumer products.

According to the CDC, the most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. If you breathe too much of it in, you can pass out or even die.

CPSC urges consumers not to purchase or sell these detectors. Stop using them and dispose of these products immediately and install new, working detectors. Report a dangerous product or a product-related injury on www.SaferProducts.gov.
